1999 Master Gardener Programs
Winter 1999
Anniversary Luncheon
Henry Kostkowski made his "My Pond Project" presentation to all Maryland Master Gardener volunteers at the luncheon.
MG Training
Two Master Gardener volunteers were speakers at the February Master Gardener Training session. Robyn Chapman spoke about Plants and Nature. Jacquelyn Hawkins-McGrail spoke about Container Plants and Bulbs.
Spring 1999
Advanced Training
Advanced Master Gardener training was held in May at the University of Maryland. More than two dozen topics were presented by a wide range of experts. Topics included medicinal plants, choosing a tree company, insect and disease walks, indoor pests, conifer diseases, and dealing with invasive weeds among others. Participants from the Charles County Master Gardeners included: Ed Spurlock, Neil Larsen, Sandy Hensel, and Mary Copeland.
Summer 1999
Compost Demo
Two Master Gardeners volunteered at the Southern Maryland Field Day at the Research Farm in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Jim Winters cooperated on a composting demonstration with Anne Arundel County Master Gardeners. Neal Larson prepared and demonstrated his septic tank model.
Plant Renewal
Nick Hurysh undertook a project at the Academy of Natural Sciences in the Estuarine Research Center in Calvert County. He worked to renovate neglected plantings.
Youth Project
Trudi Hinze has been working with a group of school children. She has been teaching entomology as well as topics about flowering plants and tree horticulture.
Database Development
Erma Howard has volunteered at Sotterley Plantation in Hollywood, Maryland. She is helping to develop a database for planning, planting, and maintaining gardens in the Southern Maryland Area. She also developed a training program for children using fact sheets; researched Sotterly herb gardens; and designed landscaping for a local business.
Fall 1999
Advanced Training
A series of five seminars on pond management provided advanced training for Master Gardener volunteers. The training included: pond construction and design; water quality and water management; pond weed control; and field experience from a pond visit.
Advanced Training
A Maryland Master Gardener advanced training program included a tour at the U.S. National Arboretum. Curators of the Arboretum provided educational information and a tour of the facility.
