New Master Gardener trainees completed classes held during February and March at the LaPlata Cooperative Extension Office. Training topics included: basic horticulture; Chesapeake Bay pollution; lawn care; pond management; composting; native plants; gardening info on the WWW; landscaping; and an edible landscape. New graduating Master Gardeners will now begin completing additional volunteer Master Gardener training and volunteer hours requirements.
Master Gardeners completed a "Landscape Vision Plan" for landscaping the Charles County Fairgrounds. Participating Master Gardeners were: Jeff Bossart and Jamie Dodge (visual aids--trees and shrubs); Deborah Carpenter (research--annuals); Judy Nathan (research--bulbs); Ashley Remik (environmental horticultural methods); Ralph Smith (hardscape/site analysis); Kathy Trimble (stormwater/aquatic ponds); Dorothy Troescher (research--perennials); Erica Wilhelm (research--time line); Sharon Zimmer (research--turf and groundcovers); and Joan Crownover (project lead and editor). The Landscape Vision Plan included both a 3'x4' landscape layout and accompanying book with specific suggestions and directions. It was presented to the Charles County Fair Board by Joan Crownover in June 2003.
