Spring 2005

Master Gardener Training

New Master Gardener trainees completed classes held during March at the LaPlata Cooperative Extension Office. A final MG gathering was held on March 12 at the College of Southern Maryland where new volunteers met with other Master Gardeners. Training topics included: basic horticulture; Chesapeake Bay pollution; lawn care; pond management; composting; native plants; landscaping; and hardscape. New graduating Master Gardeners will now begin completing additional volunteer Master Gardener training and volunteer hours requirements.

Landscape Workshop

a presentationCharles County Master Gardeners sponsored a Residential Landscaping Workshop at the College of Southern Maryland. The College was a co-sponsor of the event, and this was the third year the Master Gardeners presented classes on home landscape topics. Many Charles MGs worked together to make this effort a success including Jessica Milstead, Marge LaMar, Patty Mattingly, Dianne Shisler, Carol Xander, Cindi Barnhart, Sherran Myers, Jay Spurlin, Lin Murray, Jenny Matlack, and Delaine Carrington. Other helpers included Beth Bonifant, Deborah Carpenter, Mary Beth Chandler, and Tom Lewis. Speakers (among others) included Pam King (Cooperative Extension Agent) and Master Gardener Henry Kostkowski.

Christmas in April

Christmas in April, a volunteer organization helping needy homeowners with home upgrades/repairs, welcomed the efforts of Charles County Master Gardeners who volunteered to plant, prune, and renew neglected plantings at specified locations. Approximately 15 Charles County Master Gardeners participated in this worthy activity.

Bryans Road Library - Joan Crownover

An information table was setup every Saturday morning in April (National Gardening Month) outside the Bryans Road Library. Master Gardeners answered questions from folks with gardening problems. Master Gardeners also provided UMD fact sheets pertinent to public queries. Participants were Jim Winters, Betsy Parbuoni, Anita Bruno, Joan Crownover, and Patty Mattingly (who prepared Master Gardener and southern Maryland horticultural visual aids for display in the Library reception area).

Camp Merrick - Carole Butler

A sensory garden was completed at the Lions Club Camp Merrick.

St. Charles, Waldorf Beautification Awards - Diane Kramer

Master Gardener Diane Kramer gathered other Master Gardener volunteers to take a tour of homes in St. Charles to view gardens and judge which landscapes would receive 2005 Beautification Awards from the St. Charles management company. Ms. Kramer explained judging criteria in pre-viewing training session to prepare Master Gardeners for the task.

Summer 2005

Bugs & Nutrition - Madelene Weinberger

Madelene Weinberger coordinated teaching sessions for pre-kindergarten children at three elementary schools on January 5, 6, and 8. Children were taught by letting them dress as bugs and explaining bug characteristics.

Trash to Treasure - Bob Schneider

An agreement between Home Depot and Charles Master Gardeners was developed by Bob Schneider. The agreement provides for Master Gardeners to pick up broken bags of mulch, soil, and other items useful to Master Gardeners in implementing projects in the community.

Health and Wellness Fair - Henry Kostkowski

In response to an invitation by the Charles County Government, Henry set a a nutritional display at the Employee Helath and Wellness Fair.

Plant Sale at Farmers Market - Joan Crownover

Cindy Barnhardt and Carol Springer 

On July 3rd, a "New Guinea Impatiens Plant Sale" was held at the LaPlata Farmers Market from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Master Gardeners Joan Crownover, Cindi Barnhardt, and Carol Springer were onsite to sell the plants as a fundraiser. They also provided horticultural information to the purchasers. This event netted hundreds of dollars to support activities of the Charles County Master Gardener Program.

2005 Fall Annual Meeting

Jon Traunfeld Speaks at Charles Fall Annual Meeting 

Gardeners gathered at Carol Teets' home in Newburg, Maryland, for the annual fall meeting. The meeting opened with remarks by Pam King and was followed by Jessica Milstead's presentation about Charles County Master Gardener efforts in Charles County. Jon Traunfeld was onsite to provide information about the Maryland Master Gardener Program on the State level. After lunch, the Master Gardeners visited designated places on the grounds of Ms. Teets' home to identify insects.
