Maryland Master Gardeners are volunteers, trained by the University of Maryland, who provide horticultural education services to individuals, groups and communities. Over 1,000 Master Gardeners in Maryland contribute tens of thousands of volunteer hours each year, serving citizens of the State. The Maryland Cooperative Extension, an outreach education arm of the University of Maryland adopted the Master Gardener program in 1978. The Talbot County Master Gardener program was started in 2005 and presently has 74 volunteers.
One of the most popular activities of the Master Gardener volunteers is to answer your gardening questions and assist you in improving your gardening and landscaping knowledge. Residents of Talbot County are invited to bring their samples, photos and questions to the Talbot County office of the Maryland Cooperative Extension, located at 342C North Aurora Street, Easton. Master Gardener volunteers will review your issue and contact you with information within one week, or sooner. Volunteers are also available to meet with you to discuss your questions. Also, look for a Master Gardener booth at local Farmers Markets and other events.
Other projects include Therapeutic Gardening at the Pines, Homestead and William Hill Manor, and Junior Master Gardeners Programs at Easton, White Marsh and St. Michaels Elementaries. We have demonstration gardens at the Talbot Ag Center on Hiners Lane, the Wilson Reading Garden at Carpenter Alley in St. Michael's, and Poplar Island. Master Gardeners are available for Bay–Wise consultations and certifications for homeowners and businesses. Plant clinics are being held at the Easton Library on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month.
Talbot County conducted the first Master Gardeners Basic Training class in the county in 2006 and a second class in the fall of 2007. Most of the students came from Talbot County: a few came from surrounding counties. Following seven weeks of classes the interns finish their internship by volunteering a minimum of 40 hours working on Maryland Master Gardener community service projects. Plans are already being made for the fall 2008 Basic Training class.
